The customs of Arnesse
These pages record how people lived in Arnesse in 763, when the Annwyn appeared. They cover what a person of the kingdom would have taken for granted.
Laws, holidays, marriage, and bastardy.
The estates of the kingdom and the offices that governed it.
Markets, wages, the Cirque, and the Grand Bank.
The fall of the gods, the Aurorym, and the customs of the dead.
How Arnesse counted its days and years.
Arnesse was a feudal society. It was divided into large territories called protectorates, each ruled by a Lord or Lady Paragon sworn to the monarch in Highcourt. Paragons held their lands through high houses, and those houses held theirs through lesser and knightly houses, down to the serfs who worked the soil. Beside that chain stood the guilds, which answered largely to themselves.
All of this describes the kingdom before the war. The Chronicle records what happened to it.
